Special recruits have been drafted in to help spread the crime safety message to train passengers.

Cadets from the 1940 (Levenshulme) Squadron of the Air Training Corps are at Manchester Piccadilly handing out crime reduction leaflets.

The cadets are also travelling on trains to Manchester Airport to encourage personal safety.

British Transport Police said they were "delighted" the cadets agreed to help prevent thefts over Christmas.

Ch Supt Peter Holden, area commander for British Transport Police (BTP) in north-west England said: "Reducing the number of thefts of luggage and personal items is one of the key strands of our Christmas campaign this year and the work undertaken by the cadets will go some way towards achieving this."

The work of the cadets coincides with BTP's Christmas Campaign, Operation Holly.

Cards will be handed out to passengers asking them to be more aware of their property when travelling, as well as encouraging them to drink sensibly, treat rail staff with respect and to plan their routes well in advance.
