Heavy snow doesn’t stop Awards Evening!
| News - Members' News |
2484 (Bassingbourn) Squadron ended a busy and successful year by holding their bi-annual Awards Evening, which continued even though some cadets were unable to attend due to the heavy snow, which continued to fall that evening.
More than 100 guests attended the evening, which was held at ATR Bassingbourn. Squadron Leader Tony Kelly RAFVR (T) welcomed guests of honour Lieutenant Colonel Simon Waddington from ATR Bassingbourn, Lieutenant Commander Karen Fulton from the Sea Cadets and Squadron Leader Paul Thompson-Clark RAFVR (T), Western Sector Commander.
During the evening, many achievements were handed out, including 19 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards, 10 Duke of Edinburgh Silver Awards, 12 Youth First Aid Awards, 3 First Aid at Work Awards and 6 British Canoe Union Star Awards. Other achievements included classification certificates, BTEC Awards, swimming proficiencies and a gliding proficiency.
The Best New Cadet Award went to Cadet Ryan Slater, who joined the Squadron in January 2009. Cadet Slater received the award due to his constant commitment to the Squadron, his positive attitude and enthusiasm, as well as what he has achieved in the time he has been a cadet.
Cadet Slater (14) said of the achievement “I am very proud to have received this award. I have enjoyed my time with the air cadets so far and have had a wide range of opportunities to participate in which I have taken full advantage of”.
Other Awards presented included the Squadron inter flight trophy and the Tilson Trophy for best Staff or Civilian Committee Member, which was present to Adult Sergeant Ian Martin ATC.
The evening was also the last parade night for Cadet Warrant Officers Sam Pink and Martin Goddard, who were given a large presentation frame each, documenting their cadet career in photos.
To end the evening, the Squadron band gave a presentation of their music since the band was formed in January 2009 and all guests enjoyed a drink and mince pie afterwards!
Squadron Leader Thompson-Clark RAFVR (T) “As usual, 2484 Squadron laid on a stunning parade and awards evening. The large number of awards and certificates demonstrates the huge range of activities that cadets from the Bassingbourn area take part in”.
