Aircadets 1940 dance eventOn Saturday 20th February 2010 Air Cadets from Nuneaton and Bedworth turned back the clock for a nostalgic re-enactment of a wartime 1940's dance night.

The Saunders Hall Club in Bedworth was decked out in genuine wartime style banners and bunting with music and realistic wartime sound effects provided by Woody’s War Department all helping to take the 160 guests and Squadron members back in time 70 years to 1940 when air battles raged in the skies during the Battle of Britain

The evening’s formal proceedings began in a rousing fashion as the Union Flag and the 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron Banner entered the hall. Flight Lieutenant Ian Crewe Officer commanding 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron then gave a short introduction outlining the achievements of the Squadron during 2009 before reading out a letter from the Air Cadet Regional Commandant Group Captain Brett Morrell.

He went on to say how much he appreciated being invited to attend the Squadrons 70th Anniversary celebrations in 2009 and how he and his wife regretted not being able to join the Squadron for its latest trip back in time to the 1940’s.

During his address, Wing Commander Pravin Ladwa, Officer Commanding Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing also congratulated the squadron on its achievements during 2009. He went on to say that the Squadron provided its cadets with an excellent range of activities. Wing Commander Ladwa also thanked the unit’s adult staff for all the time and effort that they devote to the Squadron and the Wing.

Following the formalities, Woody’s War Department then provided 1940's dance music by Glenn Miller and many other wartime classics. Original sound effects including low flying aircraft and an air-raid siren together with searchlights helped to set the mood as the Squadron members and their guests, many of whom had dressed up in the 1940’s fashion danced the night away.

It was a wonderful opportunity for young and old alike to step back into the past and bring their friends and family to celebrate the Squadrons achievements over the past 12 months. We were particularly pleased to see so many of the cadets up on the dance floor. You wouldn’t think that the 1940’s music would be their thing, but unbeknown to their families and other guests they’ve been getting in some secret practice at the Squadron headquarters. After their opening Charleston Stroll performance you couldn’t keep them off the dance floor, in fact some of them were even showing the guests some of their moves.”
