Following on from their previous Goals Galore performances against 492 Squadron when they won 7~1 and their 8 ~ 1 result against 479 Squadron the 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron lads were full of confidence when they took on 165 in the Semi-finals of the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Soccer championships.

121 Soccor Team

So on the 14th March keen to maintain their 100% winning streak the 121 lads started the game on fine form with both sides evenly matched. With some good play, 165 eventually got the better of 121 overpowering their defence and scoring the first goal. 165 kept the pressure on during the remainder of the first half with the play predominantly remaining in the 121 Sqn half. Despite a valiant effort from the 121 Sqn defence and some fine saves by their goalie 165 managed to score a further 3 goals during the fist half resulting in a 4 ~ 0 score at half time. After a strong team talk by Flt Lt Crewe and CI Howes 121 were re calibrated and ready start the second half confident that they could turn things around.

The second half was most defiantly not a repeat of the first, 121 managed to hold off the relentless attack and pushed play into 165’s half threatening their goal on numerous occasions. Thomas Goodyear from 121 eventually managed to score an excellent goal, apparently the first to be conceded by 165 in this years championships. Unfortunately 121 couldn’t pull things back and 165 eventually scored another goal ending the match 5 ~ 1.

165 (Castle Bromwich) Squadron will now play 29F (Rugby) Squadron in the final in the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Soccer championships at DCAE Cosford on the 28th March 2010.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Crewe Officer commanding 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron said, “Our lads did their best to get to the final, they never gave up and kept the pressure on the opposition especially in the second half of the match. They should be proud of themselves, I can’t remember the last time we managed to get to the Semi-finals so that was a notable achievement in itself.”
